When I first moved to the American Southwest, I attended a photo workshop in the slot canyons of Arizona. One of the canyons was Antelope Canyon, which is located in the northeast corner of the state.
I have returned three times since then and hold this place close to my heart. It can be a magical and spiritual place. Although it can be busy with many photographers (some like to refer to it as "combat photography"), the chance to play with the light and learn as a photographer is worth your journey.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S TIP: Learn about the area before you go, bring some patience, and keep an open mind.
Where Is Antelope Canyon?
Antelope Canyon is about a 5-hour drive from Phoenix. Most people who visit the area stay in Page, Arizona (just a short distance from the slots).
The canyons offer a great opportunity to capture beautiful abstract images of nature.
Tips For Great Antelope Canyon Photography
These are a few helpful tips before going into Antelope Canyon.
Make reservations in advance. The slot canyons are a very popular photography destination.
Sign up for the photography tour if you want to create beautiful images. This tour does allow you to take a tripod.
There are two Antelope Canyons, upper and lower, and they are only a mile apart. I recommend seeing both of them. However, if you have to choose one, choose the Lower Canyon. It is located below ground and is more adventurous. The Upper Canyon is more easily accessible.
Bring water and hiking shoes.
The time of day and the time of year matter when you visit the canyons. It is best to arrive early in the morning for the Lower Canyon to avoid the crowds.
The monsoon season is June through September and can be dangerous due to flash floods. Always stay alert to local weather.
Learn about the Navajo customs, culture, and history before your visit. The Navajo Reservation is a beautiful place to immerse yourself in culture and the beauty of the landscapes.
