The Morning Market In Luang Prabang

World markets can offer us a window into the culture and economy of a local community. In Southeast Asia, the morning markets can get us up close and personal with the daily life of a small town.

The Luang Prabang morning market is just the place to explore life in Laos.

Located In The Heart Of Old Luang Prabang

It’s not hard to find the morning market in Luang Prabang. It occupies a couple of streets near the Royal Palace. It is near Wat Mai and just off the Sisavangvong Road.

The best time to arrive is early morning because by mid-morning, most locals are packing up and heading home.

A Great Morning Atmosphere

We arrived at the morning market just after the Alms Giving Ceremony in Luang Prabang. The market was within walking distance from the morning ceremony. By the time we reached the market, it was in full swing. However, It was a different kind of "full swing."

Like most things in Luang Prabang, the morning market moved slower and more relaxed than many other big markets we have visited in Southeast Asia. Perhaps it was the nature of the Laos culture and beautiful small-town atmosphere.

There Was Fresh Food Everywhere!

The morning market offered a very wide selection of food. Some popular items included Mekong River fish, fruit, vegetables, rice, grains, etc. Locals sold all kinds of fresh fish from the Mekong River, a short and steep walk down the riverbank from the market.

I noticed that some items were displayed on tarps, others were laid out on tables, and some items were in bowls. The setup was beautiful - inexpensive, simple, and it worked.

I had to try this local rice snack. I'm not sure what you call it, but it was delicious!

My Own Experience At The Market & In Laos

My visit to Laos was at the end of a month-long journey through Southeast Asia in 2017. I was tired and looking forward to returning home. A stop in Luang Prabang couldn't come at a better time.

The town moved at a slow and gentle pace. I will always remember and be grateful for the warmth and kindness of the Laos people.

Should you visit Laos, my advice is to go slow. Take your time to absorb Laos's culture, food, and beauty. You won't be disappointed.

XOXO
